The Old Cinema
The Old Cinema
The Woodford cinema had two levels, the cheaper ground floor seating area and the more expensive balcony section. Power was provided by an old, handcranked diesel generator before the arrival ESB network. Films were shown here almost every weekend from 1950 to 1962 with westerns like “Shane” and stars such as John Wayne and Gregory Peck proving to be popular choices. The cinema was situated just off the Main Street, in what is now private property, with the remnants of the building still visible from the street .
Woodford has a more recent connection with the movie industry. The natural surroundings create superb cinematography while the tranquil village makes for a soundman’s dream. Film and TV productions that have been shot locally include “Showbands” “Garage” “Epic” and “Calm with Horses”.
